Special Administrative Regions

A Special Administrative Region (SAR) within the People's Republic of China is a provincial level region which enjoys a high level of autonomy from the central Government and operates under its own legal and political systems, except in matters of national diplomacy and defense.

The People's Republic of China currently has two Special Administrative Regions, both of which were previously European colonies. Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997 and Macau was a former Portuguese colony until 1999.

Macau Stock Footage

Macau is the most densely populated region in the world with 541,200 people living in its 29 square kilometers.
