A Chinese Autonomous Region is a region whose population consists primarily of one of the 55 ethnic minority groups in China and so has been granted additional legislative rights (such as the right to elect a governor from the ethnic minority). An Autonomous Region is a first level region in the People's Republic of China which operates at the same level as a province.

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region
Xinjiang is the largest province-level region in China and is at the far northeast of China with borders with 8 countries, including Russia, Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Its location made Xinjiang an important region on the ancient Silk Road.
Xinjiang has been designated an Autonomous Region because of its large population of Uyghur people. Uyghurs, also known as Uigurs or Uighurs, are a muslim Turkic ethnic group.

Tibet
The Autonomous Region of Tibet is the highest region on earth and is located in the southwest of the People’s Republic of China. It's capital city, Lhasa, is home to some of the most important Tibetan Buddhist cultural sites, such as the Jokhang Temple and Potala Palace.

Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
Inner Mongolia is situated at the far north of the People’s Republic of China, having borders with Russia and Mongolia. Inner Mongolia has been part of China since the beginning of the Manchu Qing Empire in 1636 and was designated as an Autonomous Region in 1947 because of its large population of Mongol people, one of China’s 55 official ethnic minority groups.
