Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is the largest province-level region in China, accounting for one sixth of its landmass. It has been designated the status of Autonomous Region due to its large population of Uyghur people, one of the 55 ethnic minority groups in China. There are many other ethnic minority groups living in Xinjiang and our Xinjiang stock footage includes clips of the following:
- Uyghur people, also known as Uigurs or Uighurs, are a Turkic ethnic group who are predominantly muslim.

Xinjiang: Silk Road Heritage
Xinjiang is located at the northwest of China and has borders with India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Russia and Mongolia. Its strategic location made it an important region along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route between East and West. Many remnants of this heritage remain today and are featured in our Xinjiang stock footage, including:
- Traditional crafts, like spinning silk from silkworms, carving jade, weaving carpets

Xinjiang Cities
Xinjiang has several major cities, some of them old trading cities on the Silk Road, and our Xinjiang stock footage selection includes shots of the following:
- Urumqi, an industrial city, the capital of Xinjiang and the most inland city in the world
- Kashgar, an ancient oasis city on the Silk Road
- Turpan, also known as Turfan or Turphan, another oasis city which was an important trading center on the Silk Road

Xinjiang Tourist Attractions
Xinjiang is a beautiful region with stunning scenery of mountains, desert and lakes. The Taklamakan Desert (also known as Taklimakan) in the Tarim Basin is the world’s 17th largest desert and covers a large area of Xinjiang. Three mountain ranges, the Pamir Mountains, Tian Shan and Kunlun Shan, converge within Xinjiang. Our Xinjiang stock footage includes clips of the beautiful landscapes in Xinjiang including:
- Pamir Mountains, including Mt Maztagata (also known as Muztagh Ata)
- Karakul Lake (also known as Karakuli Lake or Kalakule Lake), which has settlements of Kyrgyz yurts on its banks
- sanddunes and camels in the Taklamakan Desert
