Giant Panda Stock Footage
The panda is the most famous of all of China’s animals. When people use the word panda, they usually mean the black and white Ailurpoda melanoleuca, the Giant Panda which is native to western and south western China, most famously in the province of Sichuan near the city of Chengdu. The Giant Panda is part of the bear family and can measure up to 5 feet long and weigh up to 330 lbs when fully grown.
While technically classified as carnivorous, the Giant Panda has a mostly herbivorous diet,
primarily bamboo and grass. It only gets a small amount of nutrition from its diet, which means that it needs to consume a large amount, up to 30 pounds of bamboo, in a day. This also affects the Giant Panda’s behavior, as it adopts a mostly sedentary lifestyle in order to conserve energy.
The Giant Panda has a very low breeding rate, both in the wild and in captivity, and this, coupled with the loss of it’s natural habitat, has made it one of the world’s most endangered species.
As the logo for the World Wildlife Fund, the Giant Panda has become a symbol of conservationism and in recent years many efforts have been made to ensure its survival. The Chinese Government has established over 50 panda reserves covering an area of more than 2.5 million acres. It has also made steps to improve reproduction rates, including founding the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, which aims to breed and research Giant Pandas as well as educating the public about the species.

Panda Diplomacy
Since the 1950’s, the Chinese Government has provided Giant Pandas as gifts to countries as part of their diplomatic strategy. The most famous of these was the gift of two pandas to the US by Mao Zedong, following Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China in 1972.
Starting in the 1980’s, the Chinese Government revised its policy and provided Giant Pandas only on 10 year loans, with the proviso that any cubs born would be the property of the People’s Republic of China. One of these cubs was Mei Lan (Atlanta Beauty) born in Atlanta Zoo in 2006. She was returned to China in 2010 and China in a Box has footage of her turning off the lights to mark Earth Hour at the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center.

Red Panda Stock Footage
The Red Panda is actually not of the same family as the Giant Panda. It is a small arboreal mammal and the only species of the genus Ailurus.
It is native to the Himalayas from Nepal into Western China and also found in northern India, Bhutan and Myanmar.
Like the Giant Panda, the Red Panda eats mostly bamboo, but is much smaller – only slightly bigger than a cat. It is more adaptable to changes in its environment than the Giant Panda and is common in zoos around the world. However, changes to its natural habitat have meant that it is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and conservation efforts have meant that it is now a protected species in all the countries where it is found in the wild.
