Kashgar, known in Chinese as Kashi, is an oasis city at the edge of the Taklamakan Desert at the extreme northwest of China in Xinjiang Autonomous Uyghur Region. It was an important city on the Silk Road between Chang’an (now called Xi’an) and the west, and the Kashgar Grand Bazaar is still trading today.
Kashgar Old Town is one of best-preserved examples of Islamic architecture in the region, although it is currently undergoing redevelopment. Our Kashgar stock footage includes shots of many of Kashgar’s landmark buildings and tourist attractions including:
- Id Kah Mosque, built in 1442 and the biggest mosque in China
- Mao Statue, one of the few remaining large-scale statues of Mao Zedong in China

The population of Kashgar consists almost entirely of Uyghur people (also sometimes spelt as Uygur, Uighur and Uigur) one of China’s 55 ethnic minority groups. Uyghurs are muslims and the Id Kah Mosque in Kashgar is one of the most important mosques in China.
