Hong Kong was leased to the British Empire in 1842 as part of the Treaty of Nanking and under colonial rule it thrived as a major financial and trading center. In 1997, sovereignty was transferred from Britain back to the People’s Republic of China, which designated Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region under the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”, meaning that it operates under different economic and political systems than mainland China. Cantonese, not Mandarin, is the official language and Hong Kong has its own currency, the Hong Kong Dollar.
